Lecture Series Sponsored by the Nebraska Supreme Court’s Through the Eyes of the Child Initiative 
The Through the Eyes of the Child Initiative is sponsoring a free lecture series in various communities throughout Nebraska on issues relating to children in the State’s foster care system. The Supreme Court’s Through the Eyes of the Child Initiative consists of multidisciplinary teams dedicated to improving the outcomes of children in the Nebraska court system. The organization has, for the past several years, been a major part of the Supreme Court’s efforts to improve court processing in abuse and neglect cases. 
 
Lecture Series 1: Concurrent Planning for Permanency of Children in Foster Care 
The first lecture, offered in late April, explores Nebraska’s effectiveness in foster care case management. Presenters discuss ways in which child welfare staff can best achieve permanency for children by working toward family reunification and, at the same time, developing an alternative plan for the child (such as permanent placement with a relative, or adoption) should family reunification efforts fail. Effective concurrent planning can reduce the time a child spends in foster care before a child is placed in a permanent home.

Lecture Series 2: Use of Medications for Mental Health Problems in Children 
The second lecture, offered in mid-May offers research into neurobiology and frequent problem behaviors in children. The use of psychotropic medications will be discussed along with non-pharmacological alternatives that should be considered.
